House Board Fall Meeting

Nineteen members of the board of Disciples Divinity House gathered on Monday, November 14, for the board’s Fall Meeting. Trustees reviewed reports from staff and about finances. We received another "unqualified" audit report. We heard updates on the window replacement project, the “100 x $1,000” campaign, website improvements, and the exciting lineup of performers for the 2012 Talent for the House, scheduled for March 29.

Members of the board gathered with current Disciples House students Sunday evening, November 13, for dinner from Monell’s and a presentation by Norman and May Reed on the remarkable Preston Taylor, African-American Nashville Disciple entrepreneur and churchman who founded Greenwood Cemetery, pastored churches, and led in the establishment of what is now the National Convocation of the Christian Church.

Theological Education forum online

Several friends and colleagues have called my attention to a recent online forum on the future of theological education. I read a few of the many many posts there and find them interesting, especially in light of the combination of factors that the Disciples House, in connection with an ecumenical university Divinity School, can offer. Disciples were amazingly wise to establish places such as this! I am glad to have been associated with the two Houses, each valuable in its own way.

The conversation can be found at http://www.patheos.com/Topics/Future-of-Seminary-Education.html

Did you know that 30 Disciples in the last five years have graduated in the Masters of Divinity program at Vanderbilt Divinity School through the Disciples Divinity House? These Disciples are serving in ministry all over the United States.

Disciples House, located in Nashville a block from Vanderbilt, offers scholarships, low-cost housing, and programs in ministry for Disciples ministry students. Founded in 1927, Disciples House is one of the seven recognized institutions of theological education for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where students are supported by your Thanksgiving offering. They are grateful!

Looking for a few Good Students!

It's "admissions season" for Divinity students. Do you know someone who should look at Disciples House and Vanderbilt Divinity School? Point them to the House's website to watch the video and to explore "Life at the D House." Applications for scholarship support and housing are available on the House website as well. Or, if you like, send us a name and email address and we will follow up.

Of course, Disciples House works hand-in-hand with the Admissions Office at Vanderbilt Divinity School. Prospective students should look at the Divinity School's site. The VDS deadline for applications to be considered for full tuition named scholarships is January 15.

Disciples House reviews applicants after their admission to VDS, but we advise prospective residents to get their housing applications to us as soon as possible in order to establish a "place" in line for available space.

The Heatman Cometh

Every fall, it's the same question. When do we make the change? Our “vintage “ or “antique” heating and cooling system, which runs on hot or cold water from a boiler or chiller, has only two settings. When it starts to get colder in October, residents begin to wonder: when will we turn on the heat? Those accustomed to adjusting a thermostat whenever they desire may not appreciate the dilemma of old whole-house systems. Once it's on "hot," it stays on "hot" until you turn it to "cold" in the spring. So if you turn to heat too soon, and the usual Nashville late fall heat wave comes along, temperatures inside stay on "hot." Therefore, long term residents know we try to keep it from "hot" as long as we can bear it. Disciples have a non-hierarchical church that likes to vote--and so does the House. Last…

The Disciples House community began the new academic year with the now-annual Opening Retreat on Sunday and Monday, August 13 and 14. New and returning students gathered at the Disciples House to pack sleeping bags, pillows, food, and bug spray for the overnight event at Bethany Hills Church Camp near Kingston Springs, Tennessee. The purpose of the retreat is to spend time together, to get acquainted with the diverse gifts each brings; to worship and build community among residents and non-resident Disciples; to facilitate harmonious living and learning together; and to consider our place in our vocational paths, and the role of School and House in it. The agenda was full, beginning with worship, welcome, and icebreakers. After dinner, House trustee and counselor Susan Hammonds-White talked with the group of twenty-two about the listening and living skills needed in community. The evening ended with popcorn and a…

On Thursday, September 22, General Minister And President Sharon Watkins joined House residents and local trustees for a home cooked meal, worship, and lively after dinner conversation. Residents shared their reasons for following a call to education for ministry and their hopes for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) they will inherit. See Our Photos for additional pictures.

The next House dinner will coincide with the Cole Lecture at the Divinity School on Thursday evening, October 22.

House Ministry Lunches also occur monthly and offer opportunities for students to think about some of the skills needed for successful ministry. The first Lunch of the fall semester was September 14, with Dean Mark Miller-McLemore talking about “Leading Churches through Change.” The October House lunch at noon included Andrew Quinn and John Stauffer from Kay Quinn Financial Partners, who led a session on “Financial Planning for Ministers.

Contextualizing theological education at VDS: why we do what we do

Disciples Divinity House Opening Retreat 2011 Mark Miller-McLemore, 8/2011 The Disciples House model is rare among North American churches. Its approach has been so successful that we are tempted to forget that it is still experimental and fragile. In 1950, church and school were not as separated as they are now. It was enough for a Disciples House to provide support, inexpensive housing, and the spontaneous community that naturally emerges in such a setting. Situations have changed. Now Disciples Divinity House at Vanderbilt more intentionally locates itself in the middle—between the church and the School—because School and Church really do need one another. When separate, each is less than it might be. The School tells the church: you need to be moral, you need to be intellectually honest, you need to be faithful. The Church tells the School: no matter how great your ideas or commitments,…

This year we will spend significant time on the quality of the House community. Becoming and living in hospitable community is among the highest of Christian virtues, but it is also among the most difficult, neither automatic nor easy. How do we live together…

We were so grateful for Alumnus of the Year Fred Craddock's good words, for the incredible music of Nashville Disciple Jonell Mosser, for the full house that helped us "sell out the Schermerhorn," and for the great time together. Sorry that more tickets weren't available--the new online sales system, the advance requirements of caterers, and space availability all had an impact. We look forward to seeing everyone next time. The Alumni/ae Reception later that afternoon, at the Disciples House, was jam-packed. The food and fellowship were incredible. It was great to see so many alumni/ae returning to the old D House.…

This year’s “Wise Practice,” May 5 and 6, focused on issues of stewardship and ministry. Herb Knudsen, retired from regional ministry and pastoral ministry in numerous contexts, led sessions on stewardship of self in ministry, stewardship and money in congregations, and developing leadership in churches. He also reflected with us on his varied experience among Disciples in the last four decades and shared a vast amount of resources as well as wisdom. This event’s first session featured graduates and pastoral residents Steve Mason, Diana Hodges-Batzka, and Jamie Haskins, who spoke to the process of transitioning into ministry from school. What is the good life in ministry? How do you manage time? How do you balance competing demands? How do you bring a ministry to an end? Jamie (University CC, Seattle, with Janetta Cravens Boyd) and Diana (First CC Montgomery, with Susan Diamond) are concluding their residencies,…
