Six Disciples graduated from Vanderbilt Divinity School this morning at University Commencement on the lawn, followed by the Divinity degree granting ceremony in Benton Chapel.

Ben Saunders was named recipient of the Disciples Divinity House Scholar award. Shakiya Canty earned Certificates in the Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender, and Sexuality and in the Kelly Miller Smith Institute of Black Church Studies, in addition to receiving the Student Government Association’s Service Award. Graduation celebrations are scheduled next week at Disciples Divinity House and Vanderbilt Divinity School. The Divinity School’s Celebration Service is set for Thursday, May 12, at 5:30PM in Benton Chapel. It will be preceded this year by a Disciples House Celebration Gathering for Disciples graduates in the Commons Room. We are looking forward to sending off Andrew Shaw, Ben Saunders, Shantell Hinton, Chanhee Heo, Shakiya Canty, and Kaitlyn Asher.
University Commencement at Vanderbilt will begin on Alumni Lawn at 9AM Friday, May 13, with diploma awarding ceremonies for the Divinity School in Benton Chapel starting around 10:30AM. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Tennessee called Rev. Dr. Christal Williams as its new Regional Minister and President at a special called Regional Assembly at Woodmont Christian Church in Nashville on April 16. Dr. Williams comes to Tennessee from 17 years as Associate Regional Minister in the Christian Church in Illinois-Wisconsin. The sanctuary was full and the vote was unanimous. Dr. Williams will be the first woman and the first African American to lead the Tennessee region. She follows the Rev. Dr. Glen Stewart.
